46 persons have lost their lives and 79 have suffered injuries after an apartment block was engulfed by flames in Taiwan.
The fire started spreading during the night hours at about 3.00 a.m. in Kaohsiung, in lower Taiwan.
It results from initial investigations that the fire started on the second floor of the building and spread to the 13th floor.

Taiwanese authorities estimate the victim count is far higher as there are still some persons trapped between the seventh and 11th floors.
The block was built 40 years ago and includes shops as well as apartments. There are food outlets, bars, a cinema hall and 120 apartments, The majority of the residents are elderly people.
Some 160 Civil Protection personnel were called to the scene and fought the flames for more than four hours.
It is not yet known how the block caught fire.
